Rare photos

Postby Marianne » Wed Nov 05, 2008 10:28 am

I search for rare photos of S.V.Rachmaninoff
If you have links, please post.

Plus I wonder, is there any way to see the pictures from the German site:
rachmaninoff.de/themen/bilder.shtml

enlarged?

Here are some of the rare photos that I've found:

These are great photos! Thanks much! I have a photo-portrait of a straight-on face shot of SVR, which I've not seen anywhere. It belonged to my father. I would post it, but would need to scan it first, and I don't have a scanner, or any way to copy the photo in order to post it on-line. :(

Look forward to see the treasure that you've got! :D

Thank you Daniel! I hope in few days I will finish making my little site with the photos of SVR and will be able to show you my complete collection of rare photos. Some of them are without date or commentaries (as the photos above) - you can't say where or when they were made :-(

Here are some concert photos:

I'm (I suppose we all are) looking forward to seeing your website!
As for the date and place of the photos, we can estimate his age based on known photos and try to make some logical deductions...

Well well :D of course I know about senar.ru
They even added 12 photos there when I had found them on the site of Library of Congress :D
They posted them there never mentioning the link where one can download them in high resolution (tiff) and print in whatever large size one can desire.

What I am talking about regarding German site are these three photos:

Never met them anywhere else, as for the rest photos, they are well-known enough :D

There is a legend that Rachmaninoff didn't like journalists and photographers and once after the concert on his way to the car instead of posing for the shooting he kind of protected his face with the hands (like no-no). And next day in the newspapers one could see this picture of him with the words: "These hands cost 1 million dollars".
Is it true? Does this photo exist or is it just a joke?

I didn't know about this story, but considering the way reporters usually behave it might be true...
I only know about the story with Rachmaninoff travelling aboard the same ship with a boxer. Reporters were waiting, and Rachmaninoff thought they were waiting for him. But then the boxer appeared at another exit and they all rushed there, to Rachmaninoff's relief and amusement.

I've also heard of this story :D

Look, my friends in my blog are just amazing!
I've written the post invitation to my site: rachmaninow.narod.ru
and just in order to entertain them posted few rare photos, among them one that I've found on the site dedicated to Medtner without any title at all. I saw that obviously there was SVR on the picture and complained to my friends that there is no title - where the shot was made and when.

So one of my friends, an architect, says that the buildings remind him of florentian palace a-la renaissance palazzo :D
20 minutes later he posts: yes, that's Piazza della Signoria in Florence:

So I only had to check when SVR and Metner visited Florence, and on books.google.com in Rachmaninoff by Max Harrison we read:

Feels like I'm doctor Watson :D

And you've also got some Hercule Poirot helping you...
About composing without melody, we have so many examples. Both back in those day as well as nowadays.

Yes, that's true! But that's why we like Rachmaninoff the best :D

The supper given in honor of Richard Strauss on the day of his arrival in America

Interesting photo. Wish I had it in better resolution. :(
Where could this take place? Who was the initiator of making this supper - Steinway?
Also why there are no women on this meeting?

film???

Postby RACHBOY » Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:22 pm

in the meanwhile we are still waiting for moving images of SVR actually playing....
anyone has any clues? The rumor goes that Gilels saw a piece of film of SVR playing back in the 1950'ies. Which detective can find something out here?
