Dear Zane! Thank you so so much for these photos!
You are an amazing source of precious info! I thank you on behalf of all who love Rachmaninoff in Russia but never have ever seen this work by Konenkov!!! I'll do my best for them to see them right now :-)

Thank You, Zane! Your words are always so inspiring!
Yes, Konenkoff made a very good sculpture, though not ideal one, but still I wish this sculpture would be placed instead of the monument in Novgorod where SVR looks more like a cowboy than himself)

I have two photos of the clay model that Konenkov made prior to casting the bronze. Unfortunately they are quite large, and I only have an A4 scanner, so they have to go through twice. There is therefore a slight line in the middle, and I've done my best to minimize it. This is the first, taken in profile.

Here is the other view, from the front. I would say that I miss the animation of the eyes, and there is a feeling of heroic granite, which doesn't square with the intimacy of Rachmaninoff's music or his style of playing. I have a feeling that Paderewski was not too unhappy to be lionized, but that Rachmaninoff regarded it only as a necessary evil, in order to earn a good living and make up for what he had lost in the upheavals in Russia.

[RE-POST OF ZANE'S ORIGINAL THREAD ENTRY]

His shoulders were broader than the sculpture.
