Nathan Milstein

The great Russian-American violinist (1904-1992), was a student of Stoliarsky and Auer. He played with Horowitz and Piatigorsky in sonatas and trios. He had one of the longest, most distinguished careers of any violinist.

I came across the pubilcation of Milstein's memoirs about Rachmaninoff, he wrote that he and Horowitz visited Rachmaninoff in Senar, and played for him his Vocalise.

There are lots of records him playing on youtube:

Most remarkable are his interview:

and the bbc documentary about him

I have a recording of Milstein and Horowitz playing Brahms's 3 Violin Sonata which I love very much. Anyone heard it? Opinions?

Milstein was known for his interpretations of Bach's solo violin works and for works from the Romantic period.

What a funny photo of boyish Horowitz and grumpy Glazunov!

Nathan Mironovich Milstein was one great violinist of the 20th Century. He performed at a high level into his mid 80s, retiring only after suffering a broken hand.
