Re: rachmaninoff sonata in b-flat minor performed by horowitz

When Rachmaninoff plays the main theme (the slow march theme), he plays it fortissimo where it is written piano, and i'm sure that most people would expect that if they have heard it before :) I wasn't aware that Rachmaninoff revised the 2nd Sonata. I've read that Horowitz premiered it, and as Rachm...

Re: First Symphony

I've heard it several times in recordings, but something about the electronically fabricated bass or brass section notes just doesn't shake me the way a real orchester would  I was refering to how it would affect me at a live performance, as most pieces usually have more of an impact in more n...

Re: Hello, All

I'll try to find the link if its online, I don't exaclty recall where I've seen it. Perhaps in form it is weaker, but this is something incredbily personal and unusual about the fourth concerto. At moments, it is more beautiful than anything else I have ever heard, and more emotional as well. But it...

Is there anything particular you can tell us about Howard Shelly's style? What makes his recordings unique?

Re: First Symphony

When Rachamaninoff wrote this, he was pretty terrified of death, and obsessed with it as well.

From I have heard of this symphony, I would be scared to experience it in a concert hall, considering his ability to transfer emotional expression...

Re: rachmaninoff sonata in b-flat minor performed by horowitz

But how many musicians change what they play in performance? Rachmaninoff himself refused to have one concrete version of what he wrote, and when he would perform his works he would be spontaneous and random at times, inserting octaves here or perhaps changing the shape of a melody elsewhere. Even R...

Re: Hello, All

Have any of you ever seen the interview with Vladmir Ashkenazy where he speaks about the 4th Piano Concerto? He spoke of it in comparison to the first three, and said that he believed it wasn't as successful and powerful as the previous piano concerti were. For me, its especially grasping, especiall...

Re: Howard Shelley's recordings of SVR

it seems that at this rate pretty soon we'll have inter-societal competitions for interpretation or rachmaninoff :) Ashkenazy has a very, very original way of interpreting Rachmaninoff like no other pianist... yet every time I listen to his recordings I'm always surprised because I thought he played...

It sounds fantastic! What kind of food was served?

I wish there could have been live streaming from the concerts :)

Does anyone know if there were any recordings made?
Hope I can make it next year =/
